What is glaucoma and how is it detected?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often linked to raised pressure inside the eye. Early glaucoma usually has no symptoms. It is detected with an eye examination that includes eye pressure measurement, examination of the optic nerve, a visual field test and OCT imaging.

Can glaucoma be cured?

Glaucoma cannot be cured, and vision already lost cannot be restored, but treatment can slow or stop further damage. Options include eye drops, laser treatment (SLT) and surgery such as trabeculectomy when pressure stays too high. Regular check-ups are important to keep the pressure controlled.

Who is at risk for glaucoma?

Risk factors include age over 40, a family history of glaucoma, raised eye pressure, high short-sightedness, diabetes, previous eye injury and long-term steroid use. Some ethnic backgrounds have a higher risk of certain types. If any apply to you, ask your eye doctor how often you should be checked.
