Glaucoma Treatment in Oman

Comprehensive glaucoma care from early diagnosis to advanced treatment at 4 branches across Oman

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma, also known as the "silent thief of sight," is a group of eye conditions that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve. This usually occurs due to elevated fluid pressure inside the eye, leading to gradual loss of peripheral vision.

The danger of glaucoma is that it causes no noticeable symptoms in early stages, which is why many people develop it without knowing. Early detection through regular screenings is the key to preserving vision.

Risk Factors

If you have any of the following risk factors, we recommend regular glaucoma screening

Diagnostic Tests

Tonometry (Eye Pressure)

Precise measurement of fluid pressure inside the eye

OCT Imaging

3D imaging of the optic nerve and retinal layers

Visual Field Test

Test to detect peripheral vision loss

Gonioscopy

Examination of the eye's fluid drainage angle

Pachymetry

Corneal thickness measurement that affects pressure readings

Glaucoma Treatment Stages

The treatment plan is determined based on condition severity and patient response

1
Stage 1

Medicated Eye Drops

The first line of treatment is eye drops that reduce intraocular pressure. The doctor prescribes one or more types of drops depending on the condition, and they must be used regularly daily.

2
Stage 2

Laser Treatment

If drops are insufficient to control eye pressure, laser treatment (SLT or ALT) is used to improve fluid drainage from the eye. A quick and safe procedure performed in the clinic.

3
Stage 3

Surgery

In advanced cases or when other treatments are ineffective, surgery creates a new drainage pathway. Options include trabeculectomy or drainage valve implantation.

Why Early Detection Matters

Glaucoma is called the "silent thief of sight" because it can cause permanent vision loss without any early symptoms. Damage to the optic nerve cannot be reversed, but early detection and treatment can prevent further loss. We recommend annual comprehensive eye exams, especially for those over 40 years old.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve, usually due to elevated eye pressure. It leads to gradual loss of peripheral vision and can cause blindness if not treated early.

How is glaucoma diagnosed?

Diagnosis involves measuring eye pressure (tonometry), optic nerve imaging (OCT), visual field testing, and gonioscopy to examine the eye's drainage angle.

Can glaucoma be cured?

Glaucoma cannot be fully cured, but it can be controlled and its progression prevented with drops, laser, or surgery. Early detection is key to preserving vision.

Who is at higher risk for glaucoma?

People over 40, those with family history, diabetics, individuals with severe myopia, and long-term corticosteroid users are at higher risk.
