When should my child have their first eye exam?

Children's eyes are usually checked in infancy and again before starting school, with further checks if problems are suspected. See an eye doctor sooner if you notice a squint, a white reflection in the pupil, frequent eye rubbing or squinting, or if your child holds things very close. Early detection of lazy eye and squint makes treatment more effective.

What is lazy eye (amblyopia) and can it be treated?

Amblyopia (lazy eye) happens when one eye does not develop normal vision in childhood, often because of a squint or a large difference in prescription between the eyes. Treatment works best when started early in childhood and includes glasses, patching the stronger eye, and sometimes atropine drops. Your child's eye doctor will set a treatment plan and monitor progress.
