Is LASIK surgery painful?

Numbing eye drops are used, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain during LASIK. Treatment takes only a few minutes per eye. For a few hours afterwards the eyes may sting, water or feel gritty; this usually settles within a day. Your surgeon will give you drops and aftercare instructions.

How long does LASIK recovery take?

Most patients notice clearer vision within a day or two, and many return to desk work and driving within a few days once the surgeon confirms their vision meets the driving standard. Vision can fluctuate for several weeks while the eye heals. Avoid rubbing your eyes and swimming for the period your surgeon advises, usually a few weeks.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

Good LASIK candidates are usually 18 or older, with a prescription that has been stable for at least a year, healthy eyes and corneas that are thick and regular enough. Very high prescriptions, thin or irregular corneas, keratoconus and some dry eye conditions may make another option, such as PRK or an ICL lens, more suitable. A full assessment decides.

What are the risks of LASIK?

LASIK is a well-established procedure, but like any surgery it has risks. The most common are dry eye and glare or halos around lights at night, which often improve over months. Less often, the eye is under- or over-corrected and needs glasses or a second treatment. Serious complications such as infection or flap problems are uncommon. Your surgeon will discuss your individual risk.

What is the difference between LASIK and Z-LASIK?

In LASIK a thin flap is made in the cornea, then an excimer laser reshapes the tissue underneath. The flap can be made with a mechanical microkeratome or with a femtosecond laser. Z-LASIK makes the flap with a Ziemer femtosecond laser, so no blade is used. Your surgeon will explain which technique suits your eyes.

Can LASIK fix astigmatism?

Accepted Answer

Yes. LASIK can correct many cases of astigmatism, often at the same time as short- or long-sightedness, by reshaping the cornea's uneven curve. How much astigmatism can be treated depends on your prescription and corneal measurements, which are checked at the assessment.
