B-Scan Ocular Ultrasonography
B-scan ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging test that provides a two-dimensional view of the eye’s internal structures, especially useful when direct eye examination is not possible.
What is this?
B-scan ultrasonography, also known as Brightness scan, is a diagnostic imaging technology used in ophthalmology to provide a two-dimensional cross-sectional view of the eye and the orbital structures. The examination is performed externally over the closed eyelid, making it especially useful when direct visualization of the eye is not possible.
B-scan is particularly valuable in cases where routine eye examination is difficult due to conditions such as eyelid swelling, severe cataracts, corneal opacities, keratoprosthesis, or tarsorrhaphy. It allows ophthalmologists to clearly assess internal eye structures including the vitreous, retina, choroid, sclera, and lens. This technology plays a key role in diagnosing retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, tumors, and other intraocular abnormalities. B-scan is often used alongside A-scan ultrasonography to provide a comprehensive evaluation and accurate diagnosis of various eye conditions.
Who Needs It?
Patients who cannot undergo a regular eye examination due to dense cataracts, corneal opacity, eyelid swelling, or trauma, and those suspected of having retinal or vitreous conditions such as retinal detachment or intraocular abnormalities.
